Moncef Zekri has touched down in Lisbon, and with him comes the clearest signal yet that his move to Sporting CP is entering its final stage. The 17-year-old Moroccan left-back, currently with Belgian side KV Mechelen, is understood to be working through medicals, official photographs, and the administrative steps that typically precede a formal announcement. Multiple reports describe the deal as close to completion, though none have confirmed it as fully done.
Zekri’s arrival in Lisbon marks the closest Sporting has come to confirming his move, though the deal remains officially unfinished.
The transfer has developed quickly. Reports from August 16 through August 24, 2026 trace a clear arc, from advanced negotiations and a provisional agreement to the player’s arrival in Lisbon for medical checks. On August 24, Zekri was reportedly at Estádio José Alvalade to complete the final stages of the signing process.
Sporting’s president and sporting director are said to have met with him directly, a sign of how seriously the club is treating the addition.
Some confusion remains around the length of Zekri’s contract. Some outlets report a four-year agreement, while others suggest Sporting is preparing a five-year deal. The discrepancy appears to stem from differing sources and the pace at which details have emerged, rather than any contradiction in the substance of the deal.
What is consistent across reports is that the signing is pending final paperwork and checks, with the exact term still unconfirmed.
The financial details follow a similar pattern. Sporting is reported to have agreed a fixed fee of around €3.5 million with Mechelen, with the total package potentially rising to about €4 million once bonuses are included. Some reports suggest the financial terms are still being finalized, even as the personal side of the agreement moves forward.
Zekri arrives in Portugal with a growing reputation. A Moroccan youth international, he is regarded as one of the country’s most promising young defenders and among the top prospects in his age group, joining the likes of Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal among the rising stars of the Atlas Lions. Like several Atlas Lions before him, Zekri is part of a broader trend in which Morocco’s diaspora has become a vital pipeline for the national team’s talent. Sporting CP, a club with a strong track record of developing young talent, appears well positioned to continue that pattern.
For now, the transfer sits in a familiar space for modern football deals: advanced, expected, but not yet official.
