Yassine Bounou’s Fourth Yashin Trophy Nomination Intensifies the 2026 Ballon D’Or Goalkeeper Race

Yassine Bounou has earned his fourth career Yashin Trophy nomination, placing him on the 2026 Ballon d’Or goalkeeper shortlist alongside Courtois, Martínez, Raya and García, among others.

The shortlist also includes Thibaut Courtois, Joan García, Gregor Kobel, Emiliano Martínez, Édouard Mendy, David Raya, Matvey Safonov, Unai Simón and Vozinha. Bounou’s inclusion continues a run of recognition stretching back to 2023, when he finished third in the Yashin Trophy voting and placed 13th overall in the Ballon d’Or. He ranked fifth in the 2025 edition of the award.

Notably absent from the 2026 list is Gianluigi Donnarumma, last year’s winner, whose omission has shifted attention toward the remaining contenders. Several outlets have named Courtois, Raya and García as early favorites, framing Bounou as an experienced challenger rather than a frontrunner heading into voting.

The shortlist features three African goalkeepers—Bounou, Mendy and Vozinha—a total one report described as a record for the category since its introduction in 2019. Vozinha’s nomination follows Cape Verde’s performances at the World Cup, while Mendy remains, alongside Bounou, one of the best-known African names in the field. Their presence, along with representation from South America and across Europe, gives the race a broader geographic spread than in previous editions. Bounou has established himself as Morocco’s Guardian Between the Posts, a reputation built through years of consistent performances for his national team.

Bounou’s candidacy is tied to performances recorded between August 3, 2025, and July 19, 2026, a window covering club matches for Al-Hilal, the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup with Morocco. A Ballon d’Or nominee page credited him with 58 matches, 41 goals conceded and 30 clean sheets during that period, figures used to support his standing among the shortlisted goalkeepers.

With the field mixing established winners such as Courtois and Martínez alongside newer names like García and Vozinha, the race has become more competitive than in recent years. Bounou’s fourth nomination adds another proven performer to that group, extending his run as one of the category’s most consistent candidates without yet securing the trophy itself.
