psv prospect chooses morocco

PSV winger Amir Bouchmadi, born 17 June 2008 in Sittard, has informed the Royal Moroccan Football Federation of his decision to represent Morocco, ending the Netherlands’ long recruitment battle with the KNVB for the dual-national.

The winger, born on 17 June 2008 in Sittard, holds dual nationality through his Moroccan heritage and Dutch birthplace, a background that made him a target for both the KNVB and the FRMF at youth level.

Bouhamdi, who stands at 1.78 meters and plays mainly on the left wing despite being right-footed, moved through PSV’s youth system after joining from Roda JC in 2017. His progress at the club, including growing involvement with Jong PSV, drew attention from both national federations.

He had already featured for Netherlands youth selections, appearing in various Oranje under-age categories, while also training with Morocco’s youth setups, including a Morocco U20 camp held in March 2026.

Dutch media had long referred to Bouhamdi using terms like “Marokkaans-Nederlands,” acknowledging his dual eligibility. As his performances improved, competition between the two federations intensified, with both sides actively pursuing his long-term commitment. More detailed background on his development can be found in Amir Richardson: Profile and Career Insights, which offers additional context on players navigating similar dual-nationality pathways.

Reports indicate Bouhamdi informed the Royal Moroccan Football Federation in early September 2026 of his decision. It was described by observers as a surprise in the Netherlands, where many had expected his continued involvement with Dutch youth teams to lead toward full Oranje recognition.

Following the announcement, PSV’s player profile and club communications began emphasizing his Moroccan nationality more prominently, reflecting the shift in his international pathway.

The timing coincided with another development: Bouhamdi signed a new long-term contract with PSV, reportedly extending through the summer of 2031. The extension came despite reported interest from several major European clubs, including FC Barcelona, Juventus, and Paris FC, all of which were said to be monitoring his development.

Remaining at PSV was framed as a deliberate step in his development, allowing him to continue his progression at a familiar club.
