Morocco is reportedly considering Colombia as a replacement opponent for its scrapped October friendly, after Mexico withdrew citing a scheduling clash with matches against Colombia, Peru and Chile, with talks said to be underway to stage the fixture in Rabat.
The search for an opponent shifted after Mexico reportedly withdrew from a proposed friendly, citing an already scheduled training camp and a series of other matches in the United States. Mexico is reportedly set to face Colombia on September 26, Peru on September 29, and Chile on October 6, leaving no room in its calendar for a fixture against Morocco.
This scheduling conflict pushed the FRMF to explore alternative options. Colombia emerged as a credible possibility, with reports indicating discussions between the Moroccan and Colombian federations about relocating the South American side to Rabat. The technical staff led by Mohamed Ouahbi have reportedly shown marked interest in facing South American opposition, viewing it as a useful test against a different footballing style than the one typically found against African opponents.
A match against a CONMEBOL nation would allow Morocco to measure itself on rhythm, technique, and intensity, while hosting the game in Rabat would add an organizational and media dimension. However, neither federation has communicated officially on these exchanges, leaving the matter in what is described as a phase of diplomatic and logistical suspense.
Alongside the Colombia option, a Maghreb derby against Tunisia is also reportedly under discussion, with Rabat again mentioned as a possible venue. Such a fixture would carry strong regional and symbolic weight, offering a more familiar opponent but one that typically brings tactical and emotional tension.
Egypt has also been cited in discussions, confirming that the shortlist remains open. Morocco’s World Cup qualification campaign has shaped much of the federation’s scheduling priorities as it seeks meaningful preparation matches.
The FRMF appears to be weighing contrasting options — a South American test against Colombia or a regional derby against Tunisia — as it finalizes its plans for the coming international window.
