Morocco Face Ghana: Can The Atlas Lions Finally Break Queiroz’s Curse?

Morocco will face Carlos Queiroz-coached Ghana in a friendly after the Atlas Lions’ originally scheduled match against Tanzania fell through, with Morocco having never beaten a Queiroz side in four previous meetings, losing three and drawing one.

The friendly was arranged after Ghana’s originally scheduled match against Tanzania fell through, giving Morocco another meeting with a Carlos Queiroz-managed side.

According to head-to-head records compiled by National-Football-Teams, the two nations first met in 1961, drawing 0-0 in Accra before Morocco won 1-0 in Casablanca during World Cup qualifying.

CAF data shows that prior to their 2022 AFCON meeting, Morocco and Ghana had faced each other three times at the tournament, with one win apiece, one draw, and just three goals scored combined.

The “Queiroz curse” refers to a separate trend: Morocco have never beaten a Queiroz-coached side, losing three and drawing one across four previous meetings with his teams.

Since taking charge of Ghana, Queiroz has overseen five matches, winning one, drawing two, and losing two.

Queiroz’s reputation for organization, defensive discipline, and pragmatic management has typically produced tight, low-scoring fixtures, a pattern reflected in the broader history between the two nations, where several results have ended 1-0 or 0-0.

Morocco’s national team, known as the Atlas Lions, has built a footballing identity rooted in pride and passion that makes their winless record against Queiroz all the more frustrating for fans.
