Morocco international Gessime Yassine scored twice, provided an assist and won a penalty as Strasbourg defeated Auxerre 5-1 in Ligue 1 on Sunday, November 1.

The 20-year-old winger played a central role in ending Strasbourg’s four-match losing streak, contributing to four of the team’s five goals at the Stade de la Meinau.

Yassine set up Martial Godo early in the second half before winning the penalty converted by Conrad Harder. He then scored twice in eight minutes to complete Strasbourg’s largest league victory since their 6-2 win over Troyes in September.

The performance provided a timely result for Strasbourg and another significant contribution from a player who has already established himself in Morocco’s senior national-team setup.

Yassine creates two goals before scoring twice

Strasbourg began the match strongly, with Yassine involved in the opening exchanges.

The Moroccan nearly scored in the seventh minute when his close-range header was saved by Auxerre goalkeeper Paul Nardi.

The home side continued to create chances and eventually took the lead in the 41st minute through Dário Essugo, whose shot from the edge of the penalty area beat Nardi.

Yassine became increasingly influential after halftime.

In the 55th minute, he delivered a pass across the attack to Martial Godo. The Ivorian winger moved into the penalty area and finished with his left foot to double Strasbourg’s lead.

Five minutes later, Yassine drew a foul from defender Christ Makosso inside the penalty area.

Conrad Harder converted the resulting penalty in the 62nd minute, putting Strasbourg 3-0 ahead.

Auxerre responded through Cameron Archer in the 68th minute, briefly reducing the deficit.

The visitors’ task became more difficult when Lamfia Dioubaté received a red card in the 74th minute.

Three minutes later, Yassine scored his first goal of the match.

Substitute Sebastian Nanasi found the Moroccan inside the penalty area, and Yassine finished with a low left-footed shot beyond Nardi.

He completed his brace in the 85th minute, meeting a cross from Joaquin Oso with a downward header to make it 5-1.

The two finishes capped a performance in which Yassine had created chances for his teammates before becoming Strasbourg’s main scorer in the closing stages.

Four decisive attacking actions from Strasbourg winger

Yassine finished with two goals and one officially credited assist. He also won the penalty that led to Strasbourg’s third goal.

Those contributions involved different aspects of his attacking game.

His assist for Godo came from a pass across the field during a transition, while the penalty resulted from his ability to challenge defenders inside the area.

The two goals showed different finishing techniques: a controlled left-footed strike and a header from a wide delivery.

The performance was not limited to Strasbourg’s late advantage against ten men.

Yassine had already assisted a goal and won a penalty while Auxerre still had their full team on the pitch.

His involvement throughout the match was particularly valuable to a Strasbourg side seeking to recover from a difficult run of results.

Strasbourg end four-match losing streak

Sunday’s victory ended four consecutive Ligue 1 defeats for Strasbourg.

The club had lost to Paris FC, Nice, Paris Saint-Germain and Rennes after drawing against Monaco.

Those results had increased pressure on Hugo Oliveira’s side, which entered the weekend close to the bottom of the standings.

The 5-1 victory moved Strasbourg to 12th place with ten points after nine matches, ahead of Auxerre on goal difference.

Yassine’s performance was a significant part of that recovery.

He created Strasbourg’s second goal, helped extend their lead from the penalty spot and then scored twice to complete the result.

The match also provided evidence of the winger’s ability to influence different phases of an attacking move rather than relying exclusively on individual dribbling.

Yassine’s progress matters for Morocco’s attacking options

Yassine’s latest performance comes during his first full season at Strasbourg following his January 2026 transfer from Dunkerque.

The left-footed winger has continued his development in Ligue 1 after progressing through the French lower divisions.

His growing club profile has also attracted attention beyond France.

In October, Atlas Lions Insider reported on Chelsea’s interest in Yassine, although no agreement or formal transfer has been announced.

His performance against Auxerre provides a more immediate measure of his progress at Strasbourg.

For Morocco, Yassine is already more than a prospective international.

He made his senior debut against Ecuador in March and subsequently scored during Morocco’s 4-2 World Cup victory over Haiti in June.

His background and international development are detailed in the Gessime Yassine player profile.

The winger now offers Morocco another attacking option with experience in a major European league.

However, one strong club performance does not establish whether he will start for the Atlas Lions or receive additional minutes during the November international window.

Those decisions remain with national-team coach Mohamed Ouahbi, who must balance Yassine’s form against the options available elsewhere in the attack.

The competition for places is reflected in the wider Morocco senior national-team squad.

Yassine builds momentum ahead of Toulouse trip

Strasbourg’s next Ligue 1 fixture is away to Toulouse on Friday, November 6.

For Yassine, the immediate task will be maintaining the level of influence he showed against Auxerre.

His performance demonstrated an ability to contribute through passing, dribbling and finishing in the same match.

The two goals will attract the most attention, but his earlier involvement in Strasbourg’s second and third goals was equally important to the team’s control of the contest.

For a winger competing for regular club minutes and a larger international role, the significance lies in sustaining those contributions across future matches.
