Ouazane’s youth career took a winding route before reaching this point. He first appeared with Morocco’s youth setup, then moved between the two federations for a period, even earning three caps and a goal for the Netherlands U15 side in 2024. That dual-track phase ended in October 2024, when he made an initial decision to align with Morocco. Under FIFA eligibility rules, players who switch associations before age 21 and before playing a senior competitive match can still change their allegiance under certain conditions, which explains how his back-and-forth was possible. The choice was reinforced in 2025, when he played a central role for Morocco at the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the team win the title and picking up individual recognition along the way.
Reports in Dutch media took longer to catch up with the reality on the pitch. Algemeen Dagblad reported in July 2026 that Ouazane had made his final decision in favor of Morocco, a claim echoed by other outlets in the Netherlands and France. The player himself confirmed the switch in post-match interviews following an Ajax fixture in August 2026, putting to rest any remaining ambiguity. Biographical records and football databases have since been updated to list Morocco as his definitive international allegiance.
The decision was not built on tactical planning or a clearer pathway to senior football. According to Algemeen Dagblad’s analysis, it came down to feeling. Ouazane has spoken of a “special feeling” when playing for Morocco, rooted in family heritage and cultural connection, a sentiment that reportedly outweighed the more structured environment the Dutch federation could offer. His older brother, Zakaria, already a Morocco youth international with AFCON and World Cup experience at junior level, provided a clear example that shaped his thinking. His path reflects a broader trend among players who developed abroad but chose to represent the Atlas Lions.
Despite the switch, there is no indication of any falling out with Dutch football. Reports consistently describe his time in the Netherlands setup in positive terms. For Ouazane, this was simply a matter of choosing where his heart pointed, with Morocco now set to benefit from his development at Ajax.
