Sofiane Boufal has signed with Libyan club Al-Ittihad on a free transfer, completing medical examinations and administrative procedures in Tripoli.
Negotiations between the two parties began in early September before advancing quickly toward a final agreement.
Boufal was seen arriving in Tripoli at Mitiga International Airport ahead of medical examinations and administrative procedures required to complete the switch, with the move confirmed by the club through its media channels once those formalities were finished.
Reports indicate his annual salary with Al-Ittihad will be around $5 million, or roughly €4.3 million, placing him among the highest-paid footballers in Africa.
Regional football media have described the contract as an “XXL” deal, with monthly earnings reported to exceed 2 million Moroccan dirhams, plus additional financial benefits.
The scale of the offer is seen as the key factor that convinced Boufal to choose Al-Ittihad over interest from clubs in the French second division and Spain’s top flight.
Boufal’s career has included spells at Angers, Lille, Southampton, Celta Vigo, Union Saint-Gilloise, and Al-Rayyan in Qatar before he joined Le Havre. Known throughout his career for his dribbling skill and flair, Boufal has long been regarded as one of the more exciting attacking talents to emerge from Morocco.
In his most recent stint in Ligue 1, he made 17 appearances, scoring one goal and providing four assists.
Internationally, he has earned approximately 47 caps for Morocco, scoring eight goals, and has represented his country in major tournaments.
Al-Ittihad, one of Libya’s most decorated clubs, is looking to strengthen its squad ahead of the new domestic season and upcoming regional competitions.
The signing of a well-known Moroccan international is viewed as part of the club’s strategy to raise its profile both domestically and across Africa.
The club’s coaching staff includes experienced figures from North Africa, with reported links to Tunisian coach Faouzi Benzarti.
Boufal’s arrival is expected to bolster the team’s attacking options as it pursues its goals for the upcoming campaign.
