Morocco’s 2030 Push: Can Africa Finally Host a World Cup Final?

Morocco is lobbying to host the 2030 World Cup final at a planned 115,000-seat stadium in Benslimane, part of a $35 billion infrastructure effort, while Spain points to established venues like the Santiago Bernabéu and Camp Nou as evidence of its readiness. FIFA confirmed the tournament’s hosts in December 2024 but has not named a final venue.

Central to Morocco’s bid is the Grand Stade Hassan II, a planned 115,000-seat stadium in Benslimane, roughly 60 kilometers from Casablanca. Reports put the project’s cost at around $12 billion, part of a broader $35 billion infrastructure push tied to the World Cup. Five existing stadiums across Morocco’s other host cities are also being renovated to meet FIFA standards. Morocco’s national team has historically played its matches across several stadiums throughout the country, giving the federation experience managing multiple world-class venues.

Spain, however, presents a strong rival case. Spanish officials and media have repeatedly framed Spain as the tournament’s “leader,” with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez publicly backing a home final. Spain’s proposal includes 11 stadiums across roughly eight cities, with Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid and Camp Nou in Barcelona seen as the leading candidates for the final.

The dispute has played out publicly. Moroccan federation president Fouzi Lekjaa initially said no allocation decision had been made, before later claiming that Benslimane/Casablanca would host the final. FIFA has not confirmed this, stating only that the decision will come “in due course.”

The final venue remains unresolved despite FIFA’s confirmation of the 2030 hosts in December 2024. Morocco’s case rests largely on the scale of its planned stadium, built specifically with a final in mind, while Spain leans on established venues and football prestige. Until FIFA makes a formal announcement, both nations are expected to continue lobbying publicly.
