Spain may withdraw from hosting the 2030 World Cup final if Morocco is chosen instead, according to reports, as FIFA has yet to make an official decision despite Spain, Morocco and Portugal jointly staging the tournament. Spanish officials, including federation president Rafael Louzán and predecessor Luis Rubiales, argue Spain’s 55 percent bid weighting justifies hosting the final, a dispute complicated by underlying political tensions.
According to the Spanish Football Federation, FIFA has made no official decision on which country will host the final. Spanish officials have pointed to their bid’s weighting of 55 percent as justification for hosting the final, describing Spain as the “driving force” behind the joint project.
Spanish media have reported that a Spanish withdrawal from the organization is being discussed if the final is ultimately awarded to Morocco. The scenario has been described as “hard to imagine” but is nonetheless being debated in football circles. Some outlets have cited sources close to the federation who say withdrawal is being “considered” under that outcome.
Other reports have cautioned that hosting decisions are not made “on a television set” or through political statements, noting that FIFA holds final authority. At this stage, the withdrawal talk remains at the level of media reports and commentary, without formal confirmation from any institutional body.
Luis Rubiales, former president of the Spanish Football Federation, said Spain “should withdraw” from the organization if the final is played in Morocco, calling such an outcome an “irreparable loss.” Rubiales argued that Spain, as the project’s driving force, deserves the tournament’s most prestigious match, calling it “incomprehensible” otherwise. He added that the issue is being “clearly discussed” within football governing bodies.
Current federation president Rafael Louzán echoed this stance, saying “nothing justifies” excluding Spain from hosting the final, citing the bid’s 55 percent weighting. No official announcement of withdrawal has been made.
Separately, Spain’s parliament has seen political debate over the co-organization. The Sumar parliamentary group filed a non-binding motion calling for Spain to abandon co-hosting duties with Morocco, linking the proposal to recent incidents at the Ceuta border. Any match played on Moroccan soil would likely see the hosts represented by their national team captain, a role that has historically been worn by Morocco’s team leaders.
